xx Forum Questions - Individual Support

Just a few questions about support throughout the race.

Bike course:
- Can competitors have their own support vehicle?
- Can competitors accept drink bottles from support not provided by the race?
- Can competitors leave bottles at the aid stations for pick up during the event?
- Will there be a designated location for spare wheels and potential mechanical support?

Run course:
- Can competitors have pacers?
- Can competitors accept drink bottles from support not provided by the race?

I'm trying to get a feel for what to plan for on race day. Being a 90k out and back course really leaves a lot to think about for flatting or running out of fuel during the ride.

Thanks,
EP

Great questions. This race is an individual challenge, and self-supported. There can be neutral support from the event itself, but any form of outside support is grounds for disqualification.

So:
You can NOT have your own support vehicle, or accept assistance from a spectator, fan, or family member at any point during the race.

There will be a neutral support vehicle on the bike course, but each athlete should carry supplies and be prepared to fix common bike issues like flat tires. If you have an issue on the course, let the volunteers at the next aid station know and they will get word to the on-course bike support team.

There will be the option for a special needs drop off for the bike that will be available at the bike turn-around at 90k. You can include special drink or nutrition mix, clothes or bike spares.

We haven't yet discussed a spare wheel drop off, but should be easy to accommodate. The only caveat being even with this option, your spare wheel may be in a very different part of the course than you are should you need it, so you should have spare tubes and co2 inflation set with you on your bike .

There can be no pacers on the run. Any form of pacing is considered outside assistance. It is the responsibility of each competitor to ensure that friends and family cheering do not inadvertently 'pace' them on the run course.

Like the bike, there will be a special needs section in the stadium area where special drink mixes, or clothing items can be accessed. Drink mixes can only be accessed in the special needs area, or from the on-course nutrition stations. Anything else would be considered outside assistance.

I can't find anything on line about aid stations for bike and run course. Guess I was just assuming that something would be offered. Is there a plan to have them and if so, at what intervals.

There will be aid stations on the bike and run. The specific locations are still being approved, so if you can hold that thought for a few more days, we'll be able to tell you the exact locations!

The six aid stations for the bike course, and the five for the run loop are all marked on the master map for the course available from this page: http://epicdartmouth.com/2011/370
